Leaders Demand Biden Administration Stop Propping up Haiti’s Repressive Regime
The group will host a protest demanding the Biden administration let Haitians
decide their own future.
Washington – This Sunday, October 9 at 4pm, leaders from the Haitian Diaspora, Clergy and human rights organizations joined by elected leaders including U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick will convene at Black Lives Matter Plaza and march to the White House to demand the Biden Administration stop propping up a corrupt regime that has plunged Haiti into chaos, and to let Haitians decide their own future, including creating a legitimate Haitian-led transition back to democracy and security.
Haitians have been protesting for months against the current regime. Haitians are demanding an end to a regime that has engaged in rampant corruption, collaborated with gangs, been implicated in the former president’s assassination and made life unbearable for ordinary people. Today, Haiti is shut down, people cannot obtain food or fuel, and more than half of Haitians go hungry each day.
Sunday’s protest follows a September letter to President Biden from 139 prominent U.S. organizations urging Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to stop propping up the repressive regime and let a Haitian solution emerge. Sunday’s action has been endorsed by more than 187 individuals, including author Edwidge Danticat and other prominent Haitian Americans and religious leaders, and by over 93 Haitian-American, religious, human rights and advocacy organizations, including the Haitian Bridge Alliance, Faith in Action International, Pax Christi USA, and the Presbyterian Church USA. A list of endorsing organizations may be found here.
